Water as an Element

 nat kirkman
For those of you following along on my last few posts you will know that the theme I have been writing on is" Elements in a Classical Landscape". With that said, the fourth element and for me the most exciting one is Water.

Water,  first used by the ancient world for irrigation weaving its way though fields of agriculture creating pattern upon pattern of design. Over time this gave way to the decorative pools and ponds we know today.

Water adds a decided element of classic traditionalism to any landscape.
It adds the energy and intensity needed for a good design . It has the ability to create calm and tranquility as well as light and life. It offers sound as well as repetition with its reflecting of nearby elements. It adds movement as well as life to its surroundings.  It also has the ability to cool the atmosphere around it dropping the temperature by degrees.

No matter what the size or source water magnifies and enriches  the pleasure of the gardens around it.
