A Celebrations Going On!

Back from a much needed vacation with "Mr. French", revived and renewed after a very busy design season and Celebrating my first year
 Blog Anniversary.

As part of this celebration the oh so talented designer and color expert Maria Killam from "Color Me Happy" http://www.mariakillam.com/blog/ has graciously offered to be my very first blog guest.

As many of you might know one of my design projects this season was working with Maria on creating a garden that would not only remain in budget but also reflect the amazing job she had created with the interior of her new home. A true testement as to what is possible with On-Line-Design.

Thank you again Maria for accepting my offer, it was truly an honor to work with you.

When Mary Anne White sent me the drawings for the design of my front and back yard last year I was immediately enchanted with what it could be. It was so hard for me to visualize anything because I'm not a landscape designer, nor did I remotely have the time to try and figure any of it out myself. Well the expression "Always get a professional to do what you can't do professionally yourself" was so true here. Mary Anne was so great to work with, one day she asked me if it was worth it for me to work with her on-line given that she was in New York and I am in Vancouver and I said "Of course, your aesthetic so lined up with mine, it made it so much easier to just do exactly what you specified instead of stressing over every detail and second guessing everything. I could just manage the installation and let the garden just turn into a thing of beauty because I trusted your expertise." Here is the extraordinary result: Before

Every day when I drive up to my house, I feel so fortunate that I was able to work with someone as talented and experienced as Mary Anne White.
Thanks Mary Anne for my extraordinary garden

  6. This is such an beautiful makeover! What I love about it is that it's done in a regular yard...not a magazine yard by a castle (although it's worthy of a magazine shoot). It's homey. Beautiful work, MaryAnne!

  7. Worthy of a magazine spread
Shows how even our homes can look like castles

  69. This has been an interesting journey as Maria has shared with us. It is nice to see the role reversal too--in that Maria is your client and you are the designer. Beautiful job! I love how she still has a yard for her nephews to play in after all the new landscaping. It is a true testament that working remotely can and does work.

  70. Dearest Maryanne!

I saw that you came to visit me a couple of days ago, and my wild teaching schedule has kept me from coming back in a timely manner to greet you! First of all, congratulations on your first anniversary blogging! I can say that my FIVE YEARS, going on six in January, have been the most positive experiences defining my creativity and finding like-minded friends.

Thank you for your beautifully expressed comment - it really was a timely word for me.

NOW ABOUT YOUR WORK HERE....oh, let me tell you how much I appreciate a makeover. We did the same thing with our home. I'd love to correspond with you to show you what we also did to our property. We did it all, which I can see you too have done. 78. I congratulate you on having the design vision to get past the banal and ordinary and to see the possible extraordinary. The changes are charming, modern and at the same time "timeless". Good design whether it's inside or out is hugely important to quality of life. It makes a bad day so much easier to escape when you are surrounded by beauty and the true comfort that comes from great design. Love the work, love both blogs.

  81. Nice work. The changes to the studio were the most dramatic. A dramatic improvement even without the structures and fountains that are so common down here in the US. The only thing I would have done differently would have been to run a (visual) entry walk from the door to the street, and then added some low foreground planting at this street entry to provide some depth. But that's just me. What you have here looks good.

  127. WOW! Gorgeous! I didn't know that a landscape designer/architect could do plans without visiting the site. Maria's lot/property appears completely flat which would make it easier to do plans using just the survey showing the property lines, etc. My husband and I are rehabilitating a forty year old home on a heavily treed sloped lot. Are there limitations to designing landscape plans online without physically walking and seeing the property? Maria, I love the transformation of your beautiful home....inside and out. Thank you for allowing us to see the before and after. If, it were my home, I would never move.

  137. This comment section is really difficult to understand. I have a website that is self-hosted, so I don't sign in to wordpress.com. I don't want to use my google mail account - that just gets really messy when they start sending messages and using my contact list. I am not anonymous,, none of the other profiles match me, or are ones I understand. It would be nice if it was a bit clearer; not everyone is a computer geek.

  152. The transformation is truly stunning. So much more inviting than all that concrete. The fence placement provides an opportunity for the viewer to keep looking further. When my husband and I were relandscaping, our designer gave us some advice, and said we should employ techniques that made people want to keep looking beyond what they saw at first glance. You've achieved that in this design.

  169. Absolute gorgeous transformation. Loved seeing it from beginning to end in the pictures. Great visions for the both of you. I love the vision and beauty Maryanne created and your home Maria looks so inviting. I'd be sitting out there everyday at that bench of yours. Bet it feels great to pull up to your driveway everyday. I love the hosta lane and the fence/gate but I also love the softness it has added to your home. Thank you for sharing and inspiring us all.

  184. The change in absolutely stunning! I love your work and I am happy to follow your blog. I live in Prescott, Arizona...a huge change from balmy southern California - and welcome any ideas.

  185. I love what you've done for Maria's home! Gardening is a passion of mine. I have managed to grow tomatoes in the hot, dry climate in Prescott, Arizona. Now, I need to battle the front landscaping. It snows during the winter, the soil is "sand"... decomposed granite, and we have wild havalina, deer, and other wildlife that eat anything I put in (except for our beautiful old oak and pine trees). I'll be watching for ideas!
