Back from a much needed vacation with "Mr. French", revived and renewed after a very busy design season and Celebrating my first year
Blog Anniversary.
As part of this celebration the oh so talented designer and color expert Maria Killam from "Color Me Happy" http://www.mariakillam.com/blog/ has graciously offered to be my very first blog guest.
As many of you might know one of my design projects this season was working with Maria on creating a garden that would not only remain in budget but also reflect the amazing job she had created with the interior of her new home. A true testement as to what is possible with On-Line-Design.
Thank you again Maria for accepting my offer, it was truly an honor to work with you.
When Mary Anne White sent me the drawings for the design of my front and back yard last year I was immediately enchanted with what it could be. It was so hard for me to visualize anything because I'm not a landscape designer, nor did I remotely have the time to try and figure any of it out myself. Well the expression "Always get a professional to do what you can't do professionally yourself" was so true here. Mary Anne was so great to work with, one day she asked me if it was worth it for me to work with her on-line given that she was in New York and I am in Vancouver and I said "Of course, your aesthetic so lined up with mine, it made it so much easier to just do exactly what you specified instead of stressing over every detail and second guessing everything. I could just manage the installation and let the garden just turn into a thing of beauty because I trusted your expertise." Here is the extraordinary result:
The day we took possession.
After we pulled out all the old and nasty shrubs.
The empty palette.
After
Here's another view of the front of the house.
Side entrance to the backyard - Before

And then the backyard transformation:

My design Studio - Before

We had a lot of concrete which is why there was nothing about this garden that could happen a little bit each year. That's why we ripped it all out and started again.
After
Every day when I drive up to my house, I feel so fortunate that I was able to work with someone as talented and experienced as Mary Anne White.
Thanks Mary Anne for my extraordinary garden

ReplyDeleteI love the simple palette and white fence. And the garden is just stunning.
ReplyDeleteAmy
This is such an beautiful makeover! What I love about it is that it's done in a regular yard...not a magazine yard by a castle (although it's worthy of a magazine shoot). It's homey. Beautiful work, MaryAnne!
ReplyDeleteWorthy of a magazine spread
ReplyDeleteShows how even our homes can look like castles
WOW! Great before and after photos! She did such an extraordinary job. I was tickled to see the vegetable garden added in the mix. That was just the 'piece de resistance'!
ReplyDeleteCindy
How great to see all of the befores and afters in one place. Now I'm inspired.

ReplyDeleteI love how you transformed Maria's exterior. It is just beautiful! My name is Ann Flynn and I attended Maria's first color workshop in Vancouver. I loved it and highly recommend it.
ReplyDeleteCheers,

Absolutely fabulous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! My favorite part is the side garden. Mine is so ugly right now. This really inspires. I also love the idea of having a little less grass to care for!!

ReplyDeleteWho knew landscape design could be done online? Maria's gorgeous new home and gardens attest to the great work you do. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love how this shows the dimension and soft lines landscaping adds to a home. Lots of interest and yet still manageable. Nice. Glad to be following and I've had Maria's paint boards on my wish list for my work- no more painting my own over-sized swatches!

ReplyDeleteThis is totally amazing! I love the fencing and stone pathways. What an incredible transformation!
ReplyDeletePeople seem to think they need all that concrete. I can't tell you how many homes I see with back driveways that are never used and unused garages that are half falling down. I'm going to use your photos as a big nudge for those clients that just don't "see" it! Beautiful job!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful design
ReplyDeleteI've been following the transformation of Marian's house via her blog. Love everything about the design you did for her yard, especially the fences.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could afford a total makeover like Maria's! I follow your blog through Bloglovin'.

ReplyDeletePerhaps antidepressants were invented for people living the types of 'before' houses Maria had.

ReplyDeleteThis clearly demonstrates the multiple advantages of an experienced professional design and that beautiful surroundings, inside and out, are necessary for nurturing for the body, soul, and spirit.
ReplyDeleteAll things done well are beautiful.....a well done transformation for sure. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteLovely! What a difference design can make.
ReplyDeleteSuch a gorgeous transformation - money well spent! I'm showing this post to my husband to convince him that landscape design is an excellent investment. I think these before and afters will be just the thing to get him to understand the difference between what we have and what could be. I've enjoyed so much following your work on Maria's blog, I'm looking forward to following your blog as well! And not just because I'd love to win those color boards, but that would be nice, too.

ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous. It looks so easy. However, behind all that beauty is a keen eye for design and the knowledge to create a very welcoming garden.
ReplyDeleteBRAVO!
So gorgeous. Looks so easy and perfect. However, behind the scenes is the keen mind, talent and training to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse, or in this case a beautiful garden.
ReplyDeleteBravo
It is amazing what a difference it made. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSo happy to have discovered your blog........I have been following Maria for a long time.....luv her advice and luv your landscaping plans.......
ReplyDeleteHave followed Maria for a long time.......I have gained so much from her........happy to have discovered your blog......landscaping is also one of my passions,
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love the white fence and the raised garden. I wonder if this entire landscape design would work for those of us living on a deer path ... Great blog, Maryanne!
ReplyDelete- Yulia
Very thoughtful design - doesn't look "over the top" but fits the style of the home beautifully. Love the use of whites and really like the side gate. The are in front of the studio is so inviting too. Congratulations on creating such a beautiful garden.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed following the progress of Maria's garden via her blog - beautiful! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work here. Happy blogversary!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful job! The house looks very settled in this environment.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a transformation! Just goes to show how the landscaping can make or break a home. Am happy to be introduced to your blog and look forward to more posts!
ReplyDeleteSo many fences feel closed off and forbidding; I love how you used them in Maria's yard - so inviting and warm!
ReplyDeleteSo often, fences make homes look closed off and cold; your choices made Maria's yard look both inviting and warm. Well done!
ReplyDeleteLove the fact this blog was based on an 'everyday' home and your mastery created such an inviting exterior environment. I enjoy Maria's blog and it is evident, your blog will be an added compliment. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteLoving this blog and the fact that you focused on a simple home, common in so many neighbourhoods. . This transformation with your landscaping mastery created so many warm and inviting spaces. I continue to follow Maria and look forward to receiving your blogs in the near future. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteI follow Maria for inspiration for the inside of my home and now I'm following you Maryanne for the outside. I just love what you did with her home..so simply beautiful and timeless!
ReplyDeleteThe fences are fantastic especially around the raised vegetable garden... they add substance to the simplicity of the plant material.
ReplyDeleteThis has been an interesting journey as Maria has shared with us. It is nice to see the role reversal too--in that Maria is your client and you are the designer. Beautiful job! I love how she still has a yard for her nephews to play in after all the new landscaping. It is a true testament that working remotely can and does work.
ReplyDeleteDearest Maryanne!
ReplyDeleteI saw that you came to visit me a couple of days ago, and my wild teaching schedule has kept me from coming back in a timely manner to greet you! First of all, congratulations on your first anniversary blogging! I can say that my FIVE YEARS, going on six in January, have been the most positive experiences defining my creativity and finding like-minded friends.
Thank you for your beautifully expressed comment - it really was a timely word for me.
NOW ABOUT YOUR WORK HERE....oh, let me tell you how much I appreciate a makeover. We did the same thing with our home. I'd love to correspond with you to show you what we also did to our property. We did it all, which I can see you too have done. Your studio space is stunningly changed and your landscaping, BEAUTIFUL!
Please come again, and thank you for your beautiful and charming post! Anita
Maryann,
ReplyDeleteI have followed Maria for a long time, and am happy to add you to my blogroll. Fantastic transformation!!
So glad Maria encouraged me to follow you through her giveaway!
Following on Bloglovin', by the way......
ReplyDeleteNo more sharp edges. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI want your vegetable garden! What an enchanting area. And, Maryanne, the entire yard is such a thing of beauty. Fabulous job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely transformation! I especially love the home office shot.
ReplyDeleteHave followed Maria's blog for a while, and being a passionate gardener, i've enjoyed your work on her new home. You have a new fan!
ReplyDeleteLove Maria's house...beautiful job!
ReplyDeleteI just LOVE it! I imagine it is the best property on the street now.
ReplyDeleteI congratulate you on having the design vision to get past the banal and ordinary and to see the possible extraordinary. The changes are charming, modern and at the same time "timeless". Good design whether it's inside or out is hugely important to quality of life. It makes a bad day so much easier to escape when you are surrounded by beauty and the true comfort that comes from great design. Love the work, love both blogs.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful transformation! Can you explain how you work from a distance?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful transformation from sad to charming! I'm looking forward to seeing and learning more about your work on this blog.
ReplyDeleteNice work. The changes to the studio were the most dramatic. A dramatic improvement even without the structures and fountains that are so common down here in the US. The only thing I would have done differently would have been to run a (visual) entry walk from the door to the street, and then added some low foreground planting at this street entry to provide some depth. But that's just me. What you have here looks good.
ReplyDeleteI read Maria's blog everyday! I will very happy to follow your blog. Your design of Maria's yard is so perfect, clean and neat! I love it and I am totally jealous, but in a good way. My yard could use your help!
ReplyDeleteMary
From Virginia
Building on the opposite corner of Canada to you Maria. Our retirement home in Cape Breton on the largest salt water lakes in the world. The Bras d' Or Lakes. At the drywall stage now and they are calling for color. Terrified I will pick the wrong one! Everything is in storage so nothing to use as a starting point. I really enjoy your blog Maria. Using your knowledge and suggestions from the blog daily. Keep your posts coming!
ReplyDeleteAmazing transformation...from sad to charming! You two made the perfect client/professional partnership. And kudos to Maria for buying the house despite its drab appearance and doing what it took to make it happen!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing transformation! Your work shows how landscaping is an art. These pictures make for a convincing portfolio of your talent as an artist as you work with texture, design, proportion and a beautiful palette of color. You have given Maria a beautiful outdoor living space...I would never want to go inside! So inspirational. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThis is inspiring! What a transformation!
ReplyDeleteMaryanne, you now have a huge following in the states and we all want you to do a tour and do our yards!
ReplyDeleteDelighted that we can follow your blog as the best second choice.

ReplyDeleteSo happy we can read your blog as an alternative!
Looking forward to more lovely projects.
Beautiful and functional (lovely veggie garden) !
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I am a long time follower of Maria's blog and it has been fun to watch her garden and yard come together.
ReplyDeleteHi Maryanne, I followed your work on Maria's blog. Love the way you used the white florals and many varieties of green plants. It really made the house look inviting and calm. Love the white fence, really hit the mark with that decision. I think that if I lived there I would be using the little patio by the out building every day, somewhere to sit and drink my tea and look at blogs dreaming about the day I can have you design my garden.
ReplyDeleteI have followed your work on Maria's blog, but this transformation is stunning! I am amazed that it doesn't look like it was just put in; it looks perfect and well established.
ReplyDeleteI follow maria's blog, but didn't realize she was consulting with you online and not in person! Amazing results! now I am going to follow your blog...
ReplyDeleteI can't believe this was an online consultation! I have been following Maria's blog for years, and now yours. So helpful with my last home and I am about to buy a new one!
ReplyDeleteA true testament to On-Line Design! I had no idea this could be accomplished, but this has made me a convert! Congratulations to both of you - it is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteTurned out spectacular. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHave so enjoyed he transformation at Maria's. Thank you to you both for sharing!
ReplyDeleteJust stunning - what a wonderful example of the the importance of working with your landscape designer to achieve a result that is not only technically beautiful, but a true reflection of the owners personal taste.
ReplyDeleteHave enjoyed following the transformation at Maria's. Thank you both for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love the entire transformation, but particularly like the entrance to the side yard/office created by the fencing by the left of the garage!
ReplyDeleteI love the transformation! My favorite area has to be the side entrance to the backyard. I want that!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the opportunity to win the color boards. I look forward to following your blog, as I already do Maria's.
What an amazing transformation! Your work shows that landscaping is an art, using design, proportion, plant knowledge, and a palette of color to create a beautiful outdoor living space. Sorry Maria, I don't think that I would ever want to go inside! Thank you for sharing. You are inspirational.
ReplyDeleteI've followed Maria's blog for years and even taken her program in Vancouver but haven't had an interest in landscaping until now. Mary Anne, the transformation you created for Maria is gorgeous, but also elegant and timeless in the color choices and design. I look forward to reading your blog and following you on facebook to see more of your beautiful creations!
ReplyDeleteI too am a follower of Maria's blog and have been for some time and thoroughly enjoyed her sharing with me; her transformation landscape journey with you as her guide. Will admit, a gardener I am not but do know amazing curb appeal when I see it. ☺
ReplyDelete-Brenda-

ReplyDeleteMary Anne, what you have done has made Maria's house worth double the price...talk about "curb appeal", wow...I bet she has people taking pictures all the time. Great job. Sandi
ReplyDelete'

ReplyDeleteNice work
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. And very inspiring! Makes me want to get outside and get started.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Makes me want to get started on our yard! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I especially love the added architecture provided by the fencing.
ReplyDeleteAmazing! What a difference a pro makes!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful transformation, Mary Anne -- the inside and outside of Maria's home flow seamlessly now! And I am so inspired to think that it all came about on line!
ReplyDeleteWOW! Gorgeous! I didn't know that a landscape designer/architect could do plans without visiting the site. Maria's lot/property appears completely flat which would make it easier to do plans using just the survey showing the property lines, etc. My husband and I are rehabilitating a forty year old home on a heavily treed sloped lot. Are there limitations to designing landscape plans online without physically walking and seeing the property? Maria, I love the transformation of your beautiful home....inside and out. Thank you for allowing us to see the before and after. If, it were my home, I would never move.
ReplyDeleteLove the transformation.... Especially love the vignette of Adirondacks by the design studio and the side yard.
ReplyDeleteYou and Maria are a great team! You as the designer, Maria the executor. Really lovely! :-). I'm a fan and follower of both blogs!
ReplyDeleteYour design for Maria's house exterior is totally beautiful. I love it! The two of you together would be a power house team!
ReplyDeleteYou came up with a beautiful design and fabulous transformation!
ReplyDeleteWow, adding the curves really changes the whole feel! Lots of great ideas to take away from Maria's landscaping.
ReplyDeleteThis home is the complete validation of Maria's comment " Get a professional to do what you can't do professionally." And to the power of working across the internet; a tool you have obviously mastered.
ReplyDeleteLove Maria's blog, and her yard now looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteLove Maria's blog, and her yard now looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary Anne,
ReplyDeleteI followed Maria's posts on the progress of the exterior of her home and was so inspired by the wonderful job you did! I absolutely love the white fencing and the flow of the gardens is so beautiful. I am now going to start thinking of what I can do to my yard in the spring....
Beautiful re-do!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful re-do! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThis comment section is really difficult to understand. I have a website that is self-hosted, so I don't sign in to wordpress.com. I don't want to use my google mail account - that just gets really messy when they start sending messages and using my contact list. I am not anonymous,, none of the other profiles match me, or are ones I understand. It would be nice if it was a bit clearer; not everyone is a computer geek.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work! Just lovely!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work! Just lovely!
ReplyDeleteSuch a transformation! Your new neighbors must love you - it's always nice to have a neighbor who makes such a difference and I'll bet you'll inspire some of them to up their game a bit.

What a beautiful place to relax and enjoy with family & friends!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful place to enjoy with your loved ones!
ReplyDeleteI have followed your work on Maria's blog. I love the path along the side of the garage!
ReplyDeleteIf I win the color boards I have so many people to share them with.....my mom, sisters, niece, sons, nephew, neighbor. But, I do wish she would put together some sets of her favorite color palettes that coordinate throughout an entire house. Easy and more affordable
I followed your work on Maria's blog. Love the pathway along the side of the garage!
ReplyDeleteThe transformation is truly stunning. So much more inviting than all that concrete. The fence placement provides an opportunity for the viewer to keep looking further. When my husband and I were relandscaping, our designer gave us some advice, and said we should employ techniques that made people want to keep looking beyond what they saw at first glance. You've achieved that in this design.
ReplyDeleteLoved the landscapes you've designed! Clean, classy, bright and in keeping with the style elements of the home. I am showing my new husband!
ReplyDeleteWell done! It's beautiful! You and Maria work well together. I have followed Maria for a long time and now I will enjoy following you. My two passions...interior design and gardening:)

ReplyDeleteAbsolute gorgeous transformation. Loved seeing it from beginning to end in the pictures. Great visions for the both of you. I love the vision and beauty Maryanne created and your home Maria looks so inviting. I'd be sitting out there everyday at that bench of yours. Bet it feels great to pull up to your driveway everyday. I love the hosta lane and the fence/gate but I also love the softness it has added to your home. Thank you for sharing and inspiring us all.
ReplyDeleteoh and a very Happy Anniversary Maryanne. Hope your weekend is a very lovely one.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the extraordinary transformation! What a difference it all makes. Love it! Maria always works her brilliance with color on the inside. But you are definitely her counterpart with landscape design. Can you work online with someone in Texas too?
ReplyDeleteThe transformation is stunning. Beautiful!

ReplyDeleteI'm just discovering Maria and now you! Hooray! I'm so happy. And just in time. We are in the midst of adding on to our home, so the backyard in in serious need of redoing!
ReplyDeleteI've just discovered Maria and now you! Hooray! And just in time for the addition we are adding on the back of our tiny house. So the back yard needs a serious redoing!

ReplyDeleteYou did a fantastic job with Maria's landscape. I truly enjoyed following the process. I love the simple (and classic!) color palette you stuck to for the design. Congrats on your anniversary. I'm excited to learn more and will be following your blog.

The change in absolutely stunning! I love your work and I am happy to follow your blog. I live in Prescott, Arizona...a huge change from balmy southern California - and welcome any ideas.
ReplyDeleteI love what you've done for Maria's home! Gardening is a passion of mine. I have managed to grow tomatoes in the hot, dry climate in Prescott, Arizona. Now, I need to battle the front landscaping. It snows during the winter, the soil is "sand"... decomposed granite, and we have wild havalina, deer, and other wildlife that eat anything I put in (except for our beautiful old oak and pine trees). I'll be watching for ideas!
ReplyDeleteI love the work you've done for Maria. Just beautiful. I've signed up to follow your blog.
